Organizational Purpose:

Alaska’s Broadway Kidz! is a recently formed non-profit organization (October 30, 2002) dedicated to bringing the highest quality Musical Theatre training to the youth of Alaska and to instill in them a life long passion for the arts.

Organizational Activities:

Organizational Activities: There are three separate components to Alaska’s Broadway Kidz (http://www.broadwaykidz.com). During the school year two advanced performance troupes (by audition only) of 15 students each (ages 8 to 12 and ages 13-18) meet for 10 weeks in both the fall and spring sessions. The advanced troupes (Broadway Kidz and Broadway Teenz) are available to perform at shows and public events throughout the year.

Generally, the students perform as an ensemble, or in smaller groups and even as soloists. The students have performed at a number of charity functions and festival related events with many prominent business and civic leaders in attendance including both US Senators for Alaska. They perform annually at "Trick or Treat Town" and the "Town Square Tree Lighting Ceremony." The students performed at the Governors Inaugural Ball, the 2003 Special Olympic Winter Games and have completed four annual end of the season musical theatre stage productions. In addition to the two advanced troupes, this past season we introduced a beginning troupe for students with less experience called "Off Broadway." The troupe of 15 students of all ages was a huge success and we expect many of our "Off Broadway" students to advance into our more experienced troupes this coming fall.

In the summer, a variety of summer camps are offered based upon the triple threat of dance, song and drama. Enrollment in the summer camps is typically open and does not require audition. Past camps have included classes in music theory, theatrical improvisation, jazz, ballet, stage combat, Shakespeare, monologue study, stage crafts and more. This past summer our biggest hit was the "Create Your Own Musical" camp in which students wrote, directed, choreographed and performed their own original musical.

During the school year additional classes in music, dance and drama are offered to the general public without the requirement of auditioning. Classes for the fall 2005 program may include classes in music theory and ear training, beginning tap and/or jazz, and theatre classes in improvisation and scene study.

Since inception, the majority of financial support has been through tuition fees. The Board and Staff have identified future programmatic goals including expanding the summer program to include a camp and rehearsals for our advanced troupes for a touring show to be performed in Elementary schools Fall of 2005, and a brand new fall class called "Broadway Rockz" that will focus on music from Broadway Rock Musicals such as JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, RENT, EVITA and more. For the first time there will be an instrumental segment to the class. Our goal is to reach a wide variety of local students and to create programs to pull in more teenagers and more boys.

Reasons for Public Support:

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, there are IRS budget threshold requirements for public support. Specific to Alaska Broadway Kidz, through public support, expansion of the various programs can be achieved resulting in further opportunities for the children of Anchorage.
We recognize that prospective donors from foundations and the business community are interested in both what they would achieve by providing financial support to Alaska’s Broadway Kidz and that the organization is financially stable with or without public support. We welcome all opportunities with potential supporters to address these questions.
Lastly, we have been fortunate to attract talented instructors and staff, who contribute at less than market rate their time and energy, to train our future generation of performers, leaders and civic-minded members of society. As an organization we wish to retain the stable of professionals we have attracted and one way is to improve their remuneration.

Calendar Year 2005
Corporate/Foundation Sponsorship
($5,000 and up)

Year-round corporate/foundation sponsorship will be used to expand our school year programs, summer camps and to fund touring to local Elementary Schools this fall.
For this level of sponsorship Alaska’s Broadway Kidz will include the corporate or foundation logo on all advertising for the calendar year 2005 including newspaper ads, flyers, website announcements for summer camps, specialty workshops, auditions, and all shows. Special performances by the advanced performance groups may be scheduled for the corporation or foundation for no additional fee, given mutual satisfaction of scheduling and technical performance requirements.

Guest Artists Sponsorship
Corporate/Foundation Sponsorship
($2,000 and up)

Alaska’s Broadway Kidz co-directors Jill Bess and Suzanne Schell have had the opportunity over the last year to travel to two conferences in Musical Theatre Education. Their continued education has made it possible to bring back to their students the latest in Broadway music and to connect with professional performers and educators eager to teach special workshops for our Alaskan students. We have identified two professional artists ready to share their work. Claudia Catania, Broadway and Metropolitan Opera Star and Robert Edwin, Associate Editor of the Journal of Singing and a highly respected authority on non-classical child vocal pedagogy have both agreed to come to Alaska for workshops. Costs to offer these special workshops include artist fees, transportation, accommodations and per diem. We are seeking $4000.
